Land JudgingLand Judging is a competition that is put on by the Tuscola and Huron Conservation Districts. Students compete to correctly identify three different soil types. We also have two presentations on various conservation topics and the students are quizzed after each presentation. This competition can be useful for FFA clubs and Envirothon teams preparing for regional and state competitions. Poster ContestEvery year the Tuscola Conservation District hosts a Poster Contest for all students in grades one through six in the county. The posters are judged by an independent judge at the county level and the top poster from each division goes on to state competition. Prizes are awarded to the top three division posters at the county level. EnvirothonThe purpose of Envirothon is to provide environmental education to high school students and their adult advisors throughout the State of Michigan. Teams of five students and up to four alternate members study Aquatic Ecology, Energy, Forestry, Soils/Geology, Sustainable Agriculture and Wildlife. Students also have to complete a community service project as part of the competition. The program emphasizes hands-on learning in the outdoors; field trips and one-on-one training with resource professionals is highly encouraged. Regional competition takes place in the spring and from there teams move to state and then national competitions. If you are a teacher in Tuscola County and want to participate in the competition, call the office for details at 989-673-8174 ext. 3. The Tuscola Conservation District awards participating schools with scholarship grants to help cover registration fees and lodging costs.
